15 Tangible Steps For Instagram Optimization

If you want to make money on Instagram, then Instagram Optimization matters. Simple as that. This will be the first thing that people judge you on. If Instagram is secondary to another platform for your organic growth, checkout my article on 12 Ways to Supercharge Your Organic Content Strategy.

Instagram is a primary form of contact for a lot of businesses and a way that a lot of people communicate & meet these days. 

This template will take you through 15 ways that you can optimize your Instagram & increase your presence on social media today.

In this blog I will be covering: 

 

 

1. Switch to a business profile

Switching to a business profile allows you to see features such as demographics and allows you to track your insights and growth. Instagram business profiles also allow you to add action buttons like: call, visit, email.

2. Write An Informative Bio

 

Your bio is your tell all → this is the elevator pitch of your Instagram account and you have 150 characters to disclose all this information.

Some things to keep in mind when creating your bio: 

  • Make the bio about the user. The bio should not be about your business, it should be about the experience that you will create for your customers. 

  • Include a sentence about your brand’s mission. For example, Starbucks says: “To inspire and nurture the human spirit - one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time.”

  • Summarize what you do and how it benefits the user. 

  • Finish with a call to action: “Download the app”, “Send me a text”, “Schedule a call”, “Download my free guide”, “Call us now”, “Subscribe to get more free insights” 

  • Add emojis as needed, but do not overdo it. That will cheapen the brand.

3. Add A Custom Link

 

You only get one link in bio. Make it count! Someone does not want to click on something that looks so messy that it looks like a scam. 

One of the best ways to do this is to use a tool called Bitly. This allows you to shorten links and track them! You can see how many clicks your link has received and where the clicks have come from. 

Some people like to use a  platform called Linktree to include several links in their bio. Stick to your most important links! The fewer choices the better. Customers like it when the message is easy and comprehensible.

One of my favorite ways to create a link in bio is using Flow Code. This website allows you to create a personalized QR code and build out a personalized landing page with links. 

 

4. Utilize Story Highlights 

Create your story highlight images in Canva and start using them. Story highlights are a great way to save educational content to your profile. Make sure to let your users know that you are saving the content to your story highlights. 

Create an Instagram story → View your story → Tap “Highlight” at the bottom right.

Add your most asked questions, most important tips, and daily life experiences. People like knowing that you’re saving your story highlights so that they don’t have to screenshot everything that they see and want to save.

5. Add Action Buttons

These are the action button examples: Find this by going Edit Profile → Action Buttons

Action buttons are a fantastic way to provide more information to the user and make it as easy as possible for them to do business with you.

6. Create a FAQ Story Highlight 

Instagram story highlights are one of the most effective ways to communicate information to your audience fast. Add 8-10 of your most asked questions to your story and answer them thoroughly! Add them to your story highlight. This will be the first place that people visit if they have a question about your business and what you offer. It also helps you gain trust with your audience because you are being transparent about what you are offering. 

 

If you want to delete a current story highlight, simply long press on the story highlight and the option to delete it will appear.

 

7. Post Reels With Engaging Titles 

Canva is a great platform to create cover photos for reels. Make the title large and colorful so the user knows exactly what they are about to watch. This will engage viewers who do not follow you as well.

8. Add a Location Tag to Every Photo

Even if you are not in that location, this easily allows more people to find you. When someone clicks on that location they may find your post. People love to search for things based on the location that they are currently in. 

This is what it looks like when you click on the location of any photo. If your photo makes it to the top of the location tag, your engagement will go up.

When you check post insights, you can see how many people came from the location on your photo.

9. Focus on the Quality of Followers

The days of people focusing on followers are over. People still care, but it is a big red flag if you have a large number of followers and low amount of engagement. Buying followers will lower your engagement and Instagram will not boost your posts. Focus on developing a strategy to attract your target audience. 

Some examples of increasing followers organically are:

  • Tag brands, friends, and people that you follow on your story so that they repost. 

  • Engage with your audience through your story. Show your face, talk to your audience, and listen to what they like. 

  • Show up on TikTok and call them to follow you on Instagram.

  • Engage with people that you follow. Spend 10-15 minutes per day liking and commenting on other people’s content. 

  • Be authentic. People will be repelled by your content if it feels fake.



10. Turn on Instagram Notifications 

Make it a priority to respond to your Instagram audience throughout the day. It is extremely easy to abandon them and get sucked into work. Showing that your brand is always available and is responsive looks really good & people will trust you. 

Additionally, turn on notifications for certain people that you want to make a priority to engage with. This will allow you to get notified right away every time they post so that you can engage with their content right away.

 

11. Choose a GREAT Profile Picture

Use a professional headshot or your logo, add color to make the picture stand out, and if it is of you make sure you are smiling and looking directly at the camera.

This is someone's first impression of you and how they will see you every time you come up on their phone.

12. Optimize Your Profile For Search 

In the name section, you can add other keyboards besides your name, for example, if you are a chef in Miami you could do: Paul | Chef Miami 

This makes it easier for people to find you if they are searching for a chef in Miami. Your name will likely result first. 

Below is another example. If you search Happiness Coach this woman is one of the first people to show up because Happiness Coach is in her name.

You can make this change by going to Edit Profile → Edit Name

13. Keep Your Username Simple 

Keep your name as simple and closest to your name as possible. Avoid adding weird characters and unnecessary letters. If your name is taken, try adding “.” “-” or numbers to make it unique, while still being able to find it. 

A great example of this is Starbucks. Instead of including coffee in the username, they included it in their name.

14. Earn a Blue Check Mark

People with blue check marks stand out and people automatically trust them more.

To request verification go to Settings → Account → Request Verification

15. TURN ON your Instagram story archive

 

Before creating story highlights, you must make sure the stories that you are posting are saved to your archive so that they can be viewed after they have been posted.

Go to Settings → Privacy → Story → Turn on Save to Archive 

This is critical! If this is not turned on then none of your stories will be saved.
